Q&A with Olivia Jarvis

This week at Play-Ex Sports we’ve enjoyed speaking with Olivia Jarvis to discover more about her career.

1. Where did it start and how’s it going?

I actually started my sporting career as a Gymnast from the age of four. I was quite naturally strong and quickly progressed to elite level competition. By the grand ol’ age of 22 (yes that is considered old for a Gymnast) I decided to take on a new challenge and transfer across to Weightlifting. I was lucky to find a great coach Andy Callard and live ten minutes down the road from arguably the best Weightlifting club in the country; Europa. I progressed very quickly picking up numerous English and British Champion titles alongside representing Great Britain at two European Games and a World Championships… so you could say it’s going pretty well!

2. What is the most enjoyable part of your career?

The most enjoyable part of my career has been getting to know a whole new community of people. My club members and my GB Team members are like one big family and have become friends for life, well after I decide to hang up my lifting boots.

3. Who has had the biggest influence on your career so far?

Biggest influence over my career I would have to say my Coach Andy Callard. He is a multiple Commonwealth Game medalist and Olympian.

4. What is your favourite memory or achievement so far?

My favorite moment would have to be winning my first British Championship title which then qualified me for my first international competition. Receiving my lifting suit with the GB flag across my chest was one of my proudest moments that I will cherish forever.

5. If you could improve one area of your performance, what would it be?

Probably two areas for me that I could work on:

1. Nutrition – being in a weight category sport it’s always an area that could be improved to make sure I am fuelling my body in the correct way during training blocks AND when it comes to cutting down body weight safely before a competition

2. Sports Psychology – I’m a good competitor on the day and in the moment (which is handy) but leading up to major competitions and in training I can sometimes lose focus or let nerves get the better of me. So my brain is always something I feel needs to be trained just as hard as my body.

6. Do you have any superstitions or routines that you stick to before competing tournaments?

After weigh in I will always have a peanut butter sandwich, I’m a little bit obsessed with peanut butter and it’s something I can still eat even when I’m nervous!

As for a routine, when I approach the bar I have a set few steps to follow, 1) take a big breath out, 2) nudge the bar with my shin, 3) wipe the bar with my right hand and place it in to position, 4) followed by wiping with my left hand before I lift. It looks a little bit funny but it helps me get settled and focus on my technique/ settle myself before I lift.

7. What do you enjoy doing outside of sport?

Outside of my sport, I enjoy doing lots of things. Being active is a clear one whether that be being outside hiking or going for walks. I love to travel and experience new places. In my more chill out time I love to bake sweet treats or spend time with my close friends and family.

8. What’s the biggest challenge of being a sports professional?

The biggest challenge for me is that my sport doesn’t have any funding. This means I have to work full time which can be quite intense when you are also trying to be the best athlete you can be. It also means difficult choices have to be made about where you spend your money e.g. is it on physio treatment, the right foods, or do I skip all that so that I can save to be able to afford to go on the international trips when I get selected.

9. What’s the best piece of advice you would give to any aspiring sports professional?

Firstly when referring to whether or not to start Weightlifting my advice would be to just give it a go… It’s a great sport, with a great community and can be a great supplement for other sports.

I would also say remember to enjoy every moment of the process. There will be some really tough days (they are inevitable), but without those tough days the good ones wouldn’t feel quite as sweet. Lastly, make sure you have a great support network around you and that you ask for help when you need it.

10. How did you come across Play-Ex Sports and what do you like about the Play-Ex.com platform?

I came across Play-Ex Sports on Instagram. They were really approachable and have been really supportive so far by keeping me in mind when opportunities arise. It’s good to have Play-Ex on my side.

Q&A with Ross Magill

This week at Play-Ex Sports we’ve enjoyed speaking with Pro Golfer Ross Magill to discover more about his career.

1. Where did it start and how’s it going?

I took up golf aged 13 when my friend introduced me and my brother to it. We always competed as kids growing up in everything we did. I’m happy with how it’s going so far, I went into it not putting to much pressure on myself initially and found my feet instantly.

2. What is the most enjoyable part of your career?

The most enjoyable so far is just the process and gaining experience. Travelling around to different venues each week and meeting loads of new people.

3. Who has had the biggest influence on your career so far?

My brother. From pushing each other as kids playing tennis, moving that into golf growing up and eventually into turning pro he’s supported me unconditionally.

4. What is your favourite memory or achievement so far?

Teeing it up in my first event. I’ve never really had any issue with nerves when it comes to golf but I was all over the place on that first tee.

5. If you could improve one area of your performance, what would it be?

Being able to switch on and off at the right times. It’s almost impossible to stay in the zone for 4-5 hours, but I’m working on being able to switch on when needed but also switch off.

6. Do you have any superstitions or routines that you stick to before competing tournaments?

No superstitions in particular, I use the same ball marker each round which is an old arcade token. I also must have a coffee on commutes to events.

7. What do you enjoy doing outside of sport?

I spend a lot of free time with friends, just catching up, going out for food, just enjoying be-ing around them.

8. What’s the biggest challenge of being a sports professional?

Juggling time. Finding a balance between work and downtime. Sometimes I get to absorbed in the process I forget to have some time for myself.

9. What’s the best piece of advice you would give to any aspiring sports professional?

It’s never too late to give it a go, and as cliche as it sounds, believe on your own abilities.

10. How did you come across Play-Ex Sports and what do you like about the Play-Ex.com platform?

Jon introduced me to the platform and it was a case of being shown something that I didn’t know I needed before I was shown it. The platform is great in that it’s so easy to use and the team are exceptionally helpful with anything I need.

Q&A with Elliott Grover

This week at Play-Ex Sports we’ve enjoyed speaking with Elliott Grover to discover more about his career.

1. Where did it start and how’s it going?

My fencing career started at school at the age of 10, when joining that class for the first time I had never suspected just how much that would impact my life. I won my first ever competition at aged 12 and proceeded to fence at local and national levels. I still remember a time when travelling to Sheffield for the national championships was seen as a long journey. 1 Commonwealth Gold, 2 national titles and 5 years of Senior GBR representation later and I am living in Germany training at Bayer Leverkusen aiming to be the best athlete I can be whilst competing in World Cups all over the world.

2. What is the most enjoyable part of your career?

The team spirit, with a small team of 3 fencers, we have gotten to know each other really well and have spent a huge amount of time together. Through wins and losses we have maintained that team spirit and it is something I will remember. Leaving the training hall, after a hard session and putting in the work is also one of the most satisfying experiences.

3. Who has had the biggest influence on your career so far?

My current coach David Keszler, I have known him since I was 16 years old and have followed him through many clubs and abroad to Germany. He has had a huge impact on my career and continues to bring the best out of me.

4. What is your favourite memory or achievement so far?

Being in the first GB Epee Fencing team after 10 years to reform and compete, beating Olympic Gold medalists Japan in Vancouver in my first event with the team. An unranked team beating the 5th best in the world at that point demonstrated the ability that we have in the team.

5. If you could improve one area of your performance, what would it be?

I moved to Germany to gain more exposure to world class fencing and train in a world class environment and within the next few years I expect my performance to improve. Alongside that I would definitely say in the area of Sports Psychology. It’s an area of performance all athletes can develop and improve and it is hugely rewarding when invested in.

6. Do you have any superstitions or routines that you stick to before competing tournaments?

I make sure that all my kit is functioning and working the day before the event. Methodically going through each bit of kit to ensure it is working. I then go to video analysis the night before to view everyone in my group for the next day to create my game plan. Every competition has the same routine, I will warm up, fence with my teammates and then listen to my competition playlist before heading to the piste to compete for the first match of the day. I will also win the last match of the warmup to relax and be in a winning mentality to start competing.

7. What do you enjoy doing outside of sport?

Outside of the sport, I am a master’s student in Psychology as I really enjoy learning and studying human behaviour. It is important to have time away from the sport and enjoy relaxing and meeting up with friends at times. I also have participated in teams that build and develop apps and other projects.

8. What’s the biggest challenge of being a sports professional?

The challenge as a sports professional in a sport like Fencing is having to be a self-funded athlete. Building the skills that enable you to have a dual-career that you can build around your training in order to achieve the goals you set yourself as an athlete.

9. What’s the best piece of advice you would give to any aspiring sports professional?

You’ll never know if you don’t try. Aim high and take the risks you need to do to achieve it. It’s worse not knowing what could’ve been.

10. How did you come across Play-Ex Sports and what do you like about the Play-Ex.com platform?

Play-Ex Sports found me and recommended me to their site. I have been really impressed by their team and the quality of their service. The access to services are incredibly useful for all athlete needs, in particular sponsorship where they have been invaluable at reviewing my work and sponsorship material.

Q&A with Humza Rafique

This week at Play-Ex Sports we’ve enjoyed speaking with Humza Rafique to discover more about his career.

1. Where did it start and how’s it going?

Started at 7 years old when my Dad took me to the driving range. From there I just got hooked. Going really well, still have the same enjoyment and passion for it now, as I did when I first started.

Definitely my Dad – he has been with me and supported me every step of the way.

4. What is your favourite memory or achievement so far?

Have a lot of favourite memories, from tournaments and team events, but favourite achievement would be as a pro finishing Top-10 in the 2020 Tour Final and winning the resulting shootout.

5. If you could improve one area of your performance, what would it be?

Scoring – doesn’t matter how well you hit the ball, the scores need to be as low as possible.

8. What’s the biggest challenge of being a sports professional?

The amount of dedication and discipline that is required. It’s also not your typical 9-5 job. As an athlete, some days you’re grafting for 12 hours.

9. What’s the best piece of advice you would give to any aspiring sports professional?

Don’t give up on your dreams. If you want it, go out and get it. There are a lot of people who will try to convince you it won’t work out, but you just have to focus on yourself and not let those type of comments deter you.

10. How did you come across Play-Ex Sports and what do you like about the Play-Ex.com platform?
